I'm a combat veteran of Vietnam (25th Infantry, 1967-68), I have a Purple Heart, a CIB and a deep and abiding loathing of Richard Nixon. My heroes are Marion Barry and Xena.
I have worked as a car mechanic, an insurance salesman, a janitor, a boat bum, a bureaucrat, a Sky Marshall, handy-man and computer guy. I was operating a primitive data sorting machine the day JFK was shot.
My interests are fishing, reading, music, gardening and computers.
I started fooling with computers in college, where I took a course in FORTRAN. Subsequently, I worked for the Department of Agriculture in DC where I learned a little about databases and the IBM System 360. We used punch cards and dumb terminals, and the world was an exciting place.
Later, I worked for an insurance company who had inherited an IBM PS/2 from the previous occupant of the space we rented, and found time to develop an in-house database and financial calculation
program using DBASE and Basic. I learned enough about DOS, Windows and hardware to become the go-to guy for my circle of computer-using friends. I began a small computer consulting business when the
phone calls became overwhelming.
Just about all my skills are self-taught. I've been lucky enough to have friends who have been willing to help and the resources of the Internet where thousands of people have made their knowledge
available to all who are curious enough to seek it. I belong to several mailing lists that specialize in hardware and software issues, and often learn a great deal by answering questions. The best of
these is Free PC Tech. If you join and submit a question, I may be the one who answers it. You may also submit questions here.
My current interests are HTML, CSS and Networking.
I'll add some more to this as time permits. I hope to provide some useful information about computer troubleshooting and web design.
